The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie will be released on Dec. 20, 2024, the Sonic franchise revealed Monday in a tweet.

Paramount and Sega announced the third movie in February, alongside a spinoff TV series that'll star the antagonist from the second movie, Knuckles, who is voiced by Idris Elba. The TV show is slated for a 2023 release by Paramount.

The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in April and quickly becoming the highest grossing video game movie of all time in the US.

It followed the first Sonic movie's release in 2020. Ben Schwartz voices the iconic speedy blue hedgehog from the Sega games, with both movies now available to stream on Paramount Plus.

Sonic the Hedgehog's second movie outing might have only just been released this year, but it seems Paramount Pictures and Sega Corporation are already focused on the third movie.

Following on from news in May that the team was aiming for a 2024 release, it appears Sega and Paramount have now officially locked in a December 20, 2024 launch date. This was confirmed by the official Sonic movie social media account:

As of June, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie surpassed $400 million at the global box office. In contrast, the original movie banked close to $320 million globally.

In an update back in May, it was also confirmed how the team was already seeking someone to voice the new enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, and it wouldn't necessarily be an existing voice actor (like Tails). Paramount is also working on a Knuckles live-action series, scheduled to launch in the same year.

The two Sonic the Hedgehog movies that have released so far had been very successful, so it isn’t surprising that a third movie was already confirmed. And you may recall that, a few months ago, the writers for the Sonic movies mentioned that they were aiming for the third Sonic movie to release in 2024.

Well, it seems that they were able to do just that. The official Sonic movie Twitter account has announced that the third Sonic movie will be arriving in theaters on December 20th, 2024. You can see the announcement tweet down below.

December 20 2024 sonic
The official Twitter account for Paramount Pictures' live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film series announced on Monday that the third film in the series will open on December 20, 2024.

Paramount Pictures studio announced in May 2020 that it was producing a sequel to the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog film, with Jeff Fowler returning as director, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller as returning scriptwriters. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara are credited as producers on the new film, while Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller are credited as executive producers.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sequel film opened in the United States on April 8 and earned an estimated US$26.5 million on its opening day, according to Box Office Mojo. The film debuted at #1 in 47 markets including the U.K., France, and Australia. The film has earned a cumulative total of US$190,842,518 in the United States and US$401,842,518 worldwide as of July 3. The film will open in Japan on August 19.

Ben Schwartz (DuckTales, Parks and Recreation) voiced the title character Sonic in the original film. James Marsden (Westworld, X-Men) and Tika Sumpter starred in the film, and Jim Carrey (The Truman Show, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) played the villain Robotnik.
