How do i get rid of google html?

The HTML behind the formatting of a Google Docs document is an over-complicated mess -- any automated HTML tends to be. It also assumes the same style as the Google Docs layout, with a narrow column of text using the font formatting you specified when you wrote the document. You can erase all formatting in the document before downloading as HTML, but that doesn't erase all HTML styling. The other option is to download the text file, and apply necessary HTML within the text document.

Removing Formatting & Stripping HTML

  1. Select all the text in the document by pressing "Ctrl" and "A" simultaneously.

  2. Press "Ctrl" and the backlash key ("\") to strip all formatting from the document. You can do the same thing by opening the "Format" menu and selecting "Clear Formatting."

  3. Download the document as an HTML file and open the file in your preferred plain text editor. Do not use a program like WordPad or Microsoft Word, as the formatting applied by rich text editors can break your HTML. Google Docs creates one big block of HTML and text, so looking at it might be a bit overwhelming.

  4. Delete the stylesheet. This is located between the tags, and starts with ." Select it all and press the "Delete" button.

  5. Click the "Edit" menu and select "Replace" to strip unnecessary HTML tags all at once. For instance, each paragraph tag will have class -- e.g.,

. You would enter " class='c1 c0'" (including the space) into the "Find" field and enter nothing in the "Replace" field. Click "Replace All." This will strip every instance of " class='c1 c0'," leaving regular "

    " tags in its place.

  6. Repeat the "Find & Replace" procedure with every HTML tag you wish to strip, and save your document.

Download as Text & Add HTML

  1. Select "File" in the menu, then "Download As" and then select "Text." This will give you the document in plain text format (.txt) and strip absolutely all formatting from the document.

  2. Open the text document in your preferred plain text editor; Notepad is the default in Windows. Add any HTML formatting you prefer. At the very least you will need to include paragraph tags ("

    ") and line breaks (" ").

  3. Click "File" in the menu and select "Save As," or press "Ctrl," "Shift" and "S" simultaneously to open the "Save As" dialog. Save your document with the HTML file extension instead of .txt, e.g. "filename.html." Open the HTML page in your browser of choice to check the HTML you've added.

Confused about the best uses of robots.txt, nofollow, URL removal tool? Wondering how to keep some of your pages off the web? Our webspam lead, Matt Cutts, talks about the best ways to stop Google from crawling your content, and how to remove content from the Google index once we've crawled it.

We love your feedback. Tell us what you think about this video in our Webmaster Help Group.

Note from Matt: Yes, robots.txt has been around since at least 1996, not 2006. It's hard for me to talk for 12-13 minutes without any miscues.:)
