Laptop for parents Reddit

So last year around this time of year my parents my parents bought me an Alienware 15 R2 laptop for around $2,000. This is easily the most expensive computer in our household, and it seemed pretty good at the time. A 4K non touch display, i7 Processor, GTX 970M GPU. So yeah. What's not to like? Only a few problems.

About a week after we bought it, Nvidia announced their new Pascal Architecture and the model we bought received a HUGE price cut AFTER we bought it. We are talking about $1000. And to make matters worse my workflow ended up changing.

I ended up dropping the classes that I needed to run 3D rendering programs on and started taking Broadcast, where we typically need to be very mobile when moving between locations. And at nearly 6 pounds and 1 and a half inches thick, it won't even fit in my backpack, which pretty much makes it a non up-gradable, tiny desktop. I mean I can take it places around the house, but taking it anywhere else is a pain and is just uncomfortable to do.

I needed a more portable option, so I took to the internet to find thinner options. The New Razer Blade and XPS 15 are a whole lot better than the 15 inch behemoth I have right now, but would be another $2000.

When my Dad found out I've been researching other laptops, he blew a gasket and went off on me about how I'm ungrateful and everything of the sort and how I'm not going to get a new laptop any time soon since he hasn't even finished paying this one off.

So I'm really here to ask for advice. What's the best way to go about this situation? Is there any way I can exchange it with another model? Or am I hopeless and will I have to use this behemoth for the rest of high school.
