  • If you have played with the display/brightness settings, then that screen might be gone. You might need to replace the screen.

  • If you shine a flashlight on the screen, can you see it better?

  • Yes with a flashlight we can see it much better, but if it was the back light, i would think the docking station would still work correctly with a second monitor?

  • Do you know anything about laptop screen repair?Welcome to SW, by the way.  How long have you been in IT?

Could be a bad motherboard not powering the inverter and not recognizing the dock.

  • Make sure drivers are updated and not using a generic VGA driver. This would make the dock not work and not be able to adjust screen brightness. If it is to the point where you can hardly see it at all then it most likely is a bad screen.

  • ^^^^

What he said, Check the drivers.

  • Is the screen dim pre-Windows? With and without being on the docking station? That would rule out drivers. The 2nd screen not being recognized could very well be drivers.

  • We have had heaps of these with the X240 touch. Most of the time it is the LCD cable, Lenovo have redesigned the cable so that it now has a clip to hold it in place.

  • i Have the same problem with my x240, Changed the screen cable and flex too but no gain, it displays fine on external screen tho, the Lenovo ThinkPad logo shows very dim when switched on, i don't believe there is an issue with the drivers, i also changed the power adapters both 45w and 65w but didn't work, looks like there is a problem with Motherboard Display adapter which is onboard.

Issue: Your Lenovo Laptop or tablet display is often dim or dull at 100% maximum brightness in a low light situation, and you don’t have auto brightness turned on. Like Nigel you’re turning [punching!] the brightness key up to 11 but it ain’t happening.

Cause: Lenovo Vantage color temperature setting or Windows 10 Brightness settings. The Lenovo Vantage app has settings to manage brightness that aren’t available via the normal Windows display controls and Windows 10 System brightness settings… seem to get confused, possibly by Lenovo Vantage.

Solution – Lenovo Vantage [if installed]
Disable color temperature

  1. Launch Lenovo Vantage
  2. In Settings: Device > My Device Settings > Display and Camera > Display  > Daytime Color Temperature
  3. Disable color temperature

Solution – Systems Settings
Turn Automatic Brightness On and then Off
OS version: 1809 [17763.529]

  1. Go to: Settings > Display Brightness and Color
  2. Turn On this setting [yes on]: Change brightness automatically when lighting changes
    • When I turned On Auto Brightness the display, already set to 100% brightness, got brighter. If anything it should have gotten darker in a dark room.
  3. Now turn Automatic Brightness back Off
    • Yes! Now we have light with full 100% brightness!  By… changing the brightness settings back to what it was – off.

This Auto Brightness setting was set to Off but was really On. So I turned it On, then turned it Off. Now it’s off, for now…
