My sons computer has been turned on this morning and normally when the login window comes up we just hit enter as there is no password and it boots up all ok.
Its running Windows XP Home.
Today we are receving the following error message:
"the system could not log you on as the domain HOME is not available"
I have just tried to boot in safe mode but you get the same login box and error.
Not sure what to do or how to get in to fix/restore. Please could someone help.

System manufacturer and model?
Can you enter the BIOS?
If so, do so and check that the date/time settings...and the boot settings...are as they should be [hard drive is first option].

Hi not sure if this is what is needed AMD Sempron ™ 2800
Boot drive is
1. CD/DVD-0: SONY 2 IDE-0 Samsung SP1614N
Presume I need to change those round?

Luis is right that it won't do any harm to switch the two, but It really doesn't matter if the cd drive is ahead of the hd as long as they are both at the top of the boot device order [in fact I prefer it that way for when I need to boot to a cd/dvd]. The error message you are getting MAY be caused by malware. Did anything unusual or different happen last time the system worked properly? Did you download anything potentially harmful?
It may be worth posting in the Am I Infected forum just to rule out [or in] malware.

Hi not sure whether it helps but I do have the Windows XP disc if needed to restore anything - but I dont know what the licence code is for it as its obvisouly in the machine and I cant find the case with the number on! Just trawling through all of them now to see if I can find the right one.
I have posted the query to the malware forum - no idea what was done the day before - both boys say nothing different than viewing YouTube and chatting on Skype/Facebook - had only run all the antivirus/malware removal ESET online scanner about a week ago and all was ok.

Well, you might want to run it again today. And you should also run a scan with MalwareBytes

Hi thanks for the above - I dont have the option to reboot the pc from USB [as the link goes thro to a USB download]nothing is simple for me! so I am just trying to get a RW disc so I can reboot from disc - just my luck that my computer wont allow me to save to any of the discs I've got here. Will report back as soon as I can. Just wanted to let you know what was happening.

You can burn a boot time AV to cd and run it from there if you can't boot to usb.

Hi finally I have booted with the rescue disc. It found a trojan Packed.WIN.32.Krap.HC - this has now been deleted as recommended. Thought I would check as what to do next. Many thanks.

I have now rebooted the computer and still receiving the error message "the system could not log you on as the domain HOME is not available" when the login window comes up. As previously mentioned the computer is not on any network it is just a home computer.
