I am going to air condition and heat my garage apartment, which is about 400 square feet with 8 foot ceilings. I was told that the mini split system would work best for this small space.

I am not an HVAC professional and am somewhat confused. I see some basic differences, 13 SEER vs up to 15 SEER, a better Mitsubishi warranty and a wired vs. remote control thermostat.
I am not too familiar with the Goodman brand, but the Mitsibushi is about $ more than the Goodman. Is this worth the cost for the extra warranty? Is Goodman a well made product, or should I avoid it?

Mitsubishi has a lot of r&d in their equipment and I have dealt with them for the last 10 years and haven't had any problems that weren't taken care of, Goodman on the other hand has only one time honored their implied warranty, all other times they weaseled out of all responsibility. if the contractor is reputable I would go with the Mitsubishi

All of these factors are costs to the company and are figured into overheads of the cost. Ironically the small guy will probably make more on the job than a diamond dealer even though he is less expensive. If you had a crystal ball and knew what will happen in the future with the unit,,,,, it would be an easy decision to make. A friend of mine owns his own hvac company. He would be able to so the install for less than we could. In a honesty probably in the ballpark you quoted,,, however he will not return your call on football Sundays and he also goes out of town for 2 months a year. If the unit fails he will repair it when he returns... There are ways to cut costs in a job, it just depends if quality, warranty and peace of mind reduction is worth it.

I believe it, I spent hours on line and on foot checking out HVAC systems to replace my old Oil Heater. 1 tank of kero costs upward of 1200$ and who knows where the prices will go from here. Not down you can be sure. While I went somewhat unconventionally in buying 3 separate Units that was the only way to get the 3 zone system that would work down to -13 degrees and not need any back up. The units went in over the Christmas season and went on line Jan. 1st. In January we had a week of 5 degree weather which for our area is not normal. Still in total electric cost from January to the middle of May when they were turned over to AC was 320$ I would have spent at least that much in Kero for just one month.
