R.A.K. COLLEGE OF NURSING

I. INTRODUCTION:

The Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing was established 69 years ago with the objective to develop model programmes in Nursing Education. The College continues to offer four regular programmes i.e. B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing, Master of Nursing, M.Phil and Ph.D. in Nursing. Besides these, College conducts short-term continuing education courses. The institution works in close association with Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Hospitals, Health Center and Allied agencies.

II. ADMISSIONS AND GRADUATION:

The admissions to B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing and Master of Nursing and M.Phil in Nursing are made on the basis of merit in the selection test as laid down by the Academic Council of the University of Delhi.

III. SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID:

· 77 B.Sc (Hons) Nursing students were awarded Merit Scholarship by the Department of Welfare for SC/ST/OBC & Minority, Government of N.C.T of Delhi.

· Ms. Sharehope khongthaw, a Master of Nursing student was awarded President Gold Medal for standing 1st in Master of Nursing Examination.

IV. BUDGET:

The Budget Provision for the 2016-2017 was Rs. 2,00,00,000/-/- (Rupees Two Crore only) in Non- Plan and Rs/ 8,50,00,000/- (Rupees Eight Crore Fifty Lac )only in plan Scheme.

V. TEACHING AND RESEARCH:

The college has implemented the revised curriculum for M.Sc. Nursing programme as per INC guidelines under Delhi University where along with theoretical knowledge more emphasis is on clinical experience and skill development during the academic year 2016-2017.The B.Sc.( Hons.) Nursing and Master of Nursing programme were conducted as per the schedule for a total of 280 students. All the teaching departments planned and effectively implemented the courses for B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing, Master of Nursing Programme and short-term/ continuing education courses except M.Phil in Nursing & Ph.D in Nursing for which admissions were not made owing to shortage as well as non-filling up of the senior faculty positions.

(a). Community Health Nursing :

Community health nursing programme was planned and implemented as per B. Sc, (Hons) Nursing curriculum. The field experience was given for students in urban and rural community setting. Maternity Home, Sri Niwas Puri (MCD) was taken for providing urban community health field experience. RFTC Chhawla was utilized for rural field experiences for B.Sc. (Hons) nursing students. Educational visits were arranged for B. Sc (Hons) 2nd year and 3rd year students to gain knowledge about health agencies like Indian Red Cross, Shanti Avedna Ashram, National Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC), Water Works, Sewage Disposal Plant, Mother Dairy, TNAI, Pt. Deendayal Institute of Physically Handicapped etc. In B.Sc. (Hons) nursing programme the major emphasis was to develop primary health care competencies in the family and community setting by utilizing local resources and achieve community participation. Students actively participated in the national health programs.

Master of Nursing students with community Health Nursing elective were provided field experience at G Block Sriniwas Puri. The major objective of the experience was to assist students gain competencies in rendering comprehensive care to high risk communities and families on priority basis using problem solving approach. They also planned need based community health action programme on Family welfare and prevention & control of vector borne diseases for the G-Block community at Sriniwas puri utilizing community resources and mobilizing team effort. Master of Nursing Students also completed their summer field experience at St. Stephens Hospital Delhi.

During their rural health experience at RFTC Chhawla, the M.Sc Nursing students did health survey and assessment of problems of geriatric people and conducted a health camp for them.

(b) Medical-Surgical Nursing:

During the year 2016-2017 teaching, supervision & evaluation of Medical Surgical Nursing was undertaken for Master of Nursing & B.Sc (Hons) Nursing students. The 15 post graduate students under medical surgical elective were offered the area of specialization in critical care unit for their clinical experience. They were posted in different specialty area like various intensive care units cardio thoracic , Neurology , Nephrology Orthopaedics, Emergency, OT and oncology at Safdarjung Hospital & B.L Kapoor Hospital, New Delhi and Sher i- Kashmir Institute of Medical Science, Kashmir for their summer field clinical experience to fulfil their objective. The programme was planned and implemented as per curriculum.

The B.Sc (Hons) Nursing students of III & IV semester were provided supervised clinical experience in Medical surgical area and also in different specialty areas i.e Neurology, Cardiology, Skin and VD , Nephrology, Cancer, Ortho, T.B, Eye, ENT O.T, Causality and emergency Gynae, Burns and Plastics along with medical and surgical area of different hospital mainly in Safdarjung hospital and the Lala Ram Swarup Institute of Tuberculosis & Allied Diseases New Delhi. Education visit were arranged for B.Sc (H) Nursing 1st year students were also provided supervised clinical experience in medical surgical area of Safdarjung Hospital. Educational visit were arranged for B.Sc. (H) Nursing 2nd Year to Medanta Hospital Gurgaon and Shanti Avendana Ashram. Observational visit was also planned for B./Sc (H) Nursing 1st year students at various department of S.J. Hospital and PHC Najafgarh

(c) Child Health Nursing

During the year 2016-2017 clinical supervision and education of child health nursing was undertaken for B.Sc (H) Nursing student as per stated objectives. B.Sc. (H) Nursing students were provided clinical experience for child health nursing at Safdarjung Hospital in various departments such as medical, post operative neonatal intensive care unit , immunization clinic etc. The programme were planned as per objectives and implemented. B.Sc. (Hons Nursing) Interns organized many health awareness programme and mass health education in various pediatric departments at Safdarjung Hospital The B.Sc (H) Nursing students of V and VIII semester were provided and supervised clinical experience in various pediatrics departments at safdarjung hospital and Frank Anthony public school .The programme was planned as per objectives and implemented.

(d) Psychiatric Nursing:

The B.Sc. (H) Nursing 3rd year student had their clinical experience at RML hospital and G.B pant Hospital psychiatry department.

The B.Sc. (H) Nursing interns in their sem VII were posted at RML hospital, Psychiatry Department.The students during their experience, organized and participated in various activities in the department like organizing group projects for awareness of general public above mental illness, organizing a skit in the mental Health week programme at RML Hospital, Diwali programme for the patients. The student also participated in the health camps of IITF at pragati Maidan, for dengue outbreak at Safdarjung hosp. also. The remarkable aspect wass the fact that of after finishing the group project which were held in GOPD, RML Hosp., The people in the audience got motivated and we could guide them for psychiatric OPD registration, and got the patient registered too. The exposure to the psychiatric mental Health Nursing made the students to enhance their care for patients. Besides these students went for visits to various organization IHBAS, Dilshad Garden, vishwas half way home, Noida, NDDTC, and New Delhi.

(e) Obstetrics and Obstetrical Nursing:

The clinical experience in obstetrical nursing was provided to both Master of Nursing and B.Sc (Hons) nursing students. There were total six new admissions in Master of Nursing students in this specialty. They conducted a problem solving project on caring for mother and her unborn to be born at Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi. The Project was much appreciated by the participants. For summer field experience all the students were posted in Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla.All the B.Sc(H) nursing students students were able to complete their clinical requirement in obstetrical Nursing.

f) Nutrition:

As knowledge on Nutrition is an essential component of entire health care system, B.Sc. (Hons) students were acquainted with Normal, Therapeutic and Public health Nutrition. Besides these every students were afforded with individual practical experience in the Nutrition Lab pertaining to simple preparation of beverages, complementary foods for infants, nutritious snacks for vulnerable groups.

VI. CONTINUING EDUCATION:

During the period under review, continuing education courses were conducted for nursing personnel. One national level short-term course on emerging trends in nursing management from 27th Feb 2017 to 3rd March 2017 was held. There were 30 participants participated in these workshops. The programme ended successfully

Professional study programmes, educational tours and individual study programmes were planned and coordinated for visiting nurses, health professionals and students from other states (Annexure-III).

VII. RURAL FIELD TEACHING CENTRE, CHHAWLA

The Rural Teaching Centre was established in 1950 for the purpose of providing objective oriented rural community health experience to the students. It covers population of 22,000 and is situated 35 kms away from the college. The center provides an integrated comprehensive health and family welfare service to the community. Special emphasis is given on MCH services, family planning, immunization, family welfare services, nutrition, adolescent girls health and health education programme by the students and staff of rural unit in collaboration with the staff of RHTC, Najafgarh. Staff and students also participated in National Health Programmes like Malaria control programme, Dengue control programme, Revised National Tuberculosis control programme, AIDS control programme, Diarrhea Disease control and Intensified Pulse Polio programme etc. The Centre also has DOTS and Microscopic Centre for screening and treatment of T.B. & MDRTB patients. In addition, the centre provides mobile van clinic services to seven villages with special emphasis on Primary, secondary and tertiary level. RFTC Chhawla is also a Team Movement Point for pulse polio programmes.

B. Sc (Hons) Nursing 1st year students learnt to make health assessment of individual and effect of health determinants in community setting. They made observation of community health and health allied resources. Second year students learnt to give health education in different community setting and gained insight of epidemiological trial. They also learnt to identify the health problems in community by family interaction and observation of environmental factors.

B.Sc (Hons) Nursing III Semester and VI Semester students developed competency in providing comprehensive health care to the individual, family and community. They also learnt to conduct community survey to identify specific health needs and problems. They plan, organize and evaluate nursing programme based on the need identified. The students were helped in gaining insight of the health services rendered to the rural community by providing need based family health care and organizing health education programme in different community setting. The total expenditure on books and journals during the period was Rs. 10, 07,711/- (Rupees Ten Lacs Seven Thousand Seven Hundred and Eleven) only. Xerox facilities and lending facilities were provided to the students and staff.

IX. STUDENT WELFARE AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

a) Student Health Programmes

The main objectives of the student health programme are to help students to promote and maintain their own health, and to prevent and control the diseases by early detection and treatment.

Detailed medical examination was done for all new admissions. Other activities of the Health Office are periodical check-up, treatment of minor ailments, follow-up, immunization, individual counseling and guidance. Details of activities are given in (Annexure VI).

b) SNA Activities:

Students started the year with lot of enthusiasm & initiated activities at SNA unit level & National level. Brief accounts of activities are as follows:

- The session 2016-2017 began with the celebration of Freshers party which was an expression of welcome to the new batch of B.Sc. (H) Nursing 1st year & Master of Nursing.

- The students took active participation in celebrating the festive occasions in the college. The celebration included Independence Day celebration, Teachers Day celebration, onam celebration, Christmas celebration & New Year.

- Our students won different prizes in different competitions. Our students won 1st prize in on the spot poster making competitions organized by TNAI.

- Our students won III prize in health education in the form of skit held at Safdarjung College of Nursing.

- The students also participated in yearly celebration of Health Mela 2016-17 & won 3rd prize in Collage Making.

- Students added glory to the college by winning Ist prize in Javelin throw, III prize Discuss throw, 3rd prize in Relay Race in a sports Meet at Rufaida College of Nursing organized by TNAI.

- Our students won 2nd prize in Group dance, won Ist prize in debate competition & 2nd prize in Essay competition.

- SNA election was held & new executive members were being elected for the year 2017-18.

- Active students participation could be seen in General Body Meetings & Executive Committee Meetings where the students body discussed the problems which were promptly reported to the authority bringing fruitful results.

C) Sports Activities

Regular sports classes are held for B.Sc (Hons) nursing and Master of Nursing students once a week. The classes conducted by an external sports faculty Mr. Kamal Nain Singh.

Various inter class competitions were held like chess, Carrom, Cricket, Kho-Kho, Relay Race, Discuss Throw, Javelin Throw, Badminton, throw ball etc. Prizes of different sports events were distributed on Annual sports Meet celebration.

The 53rd Annual sports meet was held on 17th February 2017.Mr.Ramesh Kumar, ACP Police Station Cannaught Place division and Dr.Anita jain Additional medical superintendent Safdarjung hospital Delhi were the chief guest for the morning/ evening session respectively. All faculty members actively participated to make the event a success.

X. OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Despite the limitations of accommodation, faculty positions, other restraints and constraints, the College has made great strides in the field of nursing and health care. Our faculty is enthusiastic and hard working. Some teachers of the college are engaged in many areas of research in different fields of nursing and nursing education. Some of them are providing consultative and advisory services and are participating in some projects and meetings at national level.

In accordance with the Delhi University regulation Policy on Sexual Harassment Ordinance XV(D): Prohibition of and Punishment for Sexual Harassment of University of Delhi, A College Complaint Committee of 9 members including two outside members has been formulated for dealing with cases of Sexual Harassment.

The College (faculty and students) is participating regularly in Pulse Polio Immunization Programme since 1995. RFTC, Chhawla has been made TMP (Team Movement Point) for Pulse Polio since 2002. Assembly and zonal coordinators have highly appreciated the quality of work done by the College students and teachers in House to House activity of Pulse Polio Programme. The faculty and college are regularly participating in Perfect Health Mela.

Several faculty members have participated and organized short term course and workshops. Some of them have published and presented papers. Many of the staff members are the executive members of Professional organizations (Annexure III & VII).

XI. ACHIEVEMENTS:

- Dr. (Mrs. Harindarjeet Goyal & Dr. (Mrs.) Molly Babu are guiding 6 & 4 Ph. D students respectively under the Ph.D. programme offered by Ph.D. Consortium initiated by Indian Nursing Council and R.G.U.H.S. (Annexure VIII)

XII. PROBLEMS FACED:

- Most of the senior faculty positions are vacant. There has been no promotion/regularization for many years leading to stagnation and de-motivation of faculty.

- The library needs upgradation in terms of recent editions of books, journals and automation.

· Faculty positions: Post of Principal, Vice-principal and senior Lecturer needs to be filled up on regular basis .

· Non-creation of clinical specialty posts for post-graduate teaching.

· 27% reserved seats in B.Sc. (Hons) and Master of Nursing courses for OBC students were taken without any faculty and infrastructure which is creating a lot of problem.

· Principals post is lying vacant since June, 2007.

· Vice-Principals post is lying vacant since 1st June 2010.

· Non-enhancement of B.Sc. (Hons) Internship allowance from existing Rs 500/- p.m.

· Non-enhancement of Central Govt. Scholarship from existing Rs.150/- p.m for B.Sc. (Hons) and Rs.250/- p.m. for Master of Nursing students.

XIII. FUTURE PLANS:

• Strengthening of RAK College of Nursing: As Centre of Excellence, Rs. 96.83 crores is planned for the expansion work by provision of additional construction, lab equipments, library and strengthening of faculty etc.
• The Architectural plans are ready and clearance is sought from all civic agencies except land and development office. It is under process likely to be sought soon with the help of higher authorities at ministry of health and family welfare.
