It is interesting to note that the phrasal verb put off has one of its definitions listed by the American Heritage Dictionary as synonymous with take off:

put off

1. a. To delay; postpone: put off paying the bills. b. To persuade to delay further action: managed to put off the creditors for another week.
2. To take off; discard: put off a sweater.
3. To repel or repulse, as from bad manners: His indifferent attitude has put us off.
4. To pass [money] or sell [merchandise] fraudulently.

On the other hand, the OALD doesnt have any definitions for put off that are synonymous with take off. Instead, the OALD lists put on as an opposite to take off.
Because of these two divergent views by the lexicographers, it is no wonder why the poster was confused.

A question that could have two plausible answers is not a valid question to be given in standardized exams developed by the ETS.

At the same time, in the context of the question, take off is more frequently used, and if this is an IELTS test, thats the answer that should be chosen.
