    Hi,

    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.

    Can you let us know the server version? Do you have enough RDS CAL for your License server?

    Because from the error description it seems that you have not enough RDS CAL and the Licensing mode is not configured properly. To resolve the issue, we need to specify the license mode for the RDSH server. There is a licensing grace period during which no license server is required, after the grace period ends, clients must receive a valid RDS CAL issued by a license server before they can log on to an RD Session Host server.

    To specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode:
    1. On the RD Session Host server, open Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. To open Remote Desktop Session Host Confiiguration, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, point to Remote Desktop Services, and then click Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration.

    2. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Yes.
    3. Under Licensing, double-click Remote Desktop licensing mode.
    4. Select either Per Device or Per User, depending on your environment.
    5. Click OK.

    For more information.
    Event ID 1069 — Remote Desktop Services Client Access License [RDS CAL] Availability

    Hope it helps!

    Thanks.

I found the fix. It is here:

//www.360ict.nl/blog/no-remote-desktop-licence-server-availible-on-rd-session-host-server-2012/

This works in server 2008R2 as well as server 2012.

Remote Desktop services shouldn't even be installed unless you are on a larger enterprise/datacenternetwork. Unless you want to access outside of the corp network without a VPN.

You can just run RDP from computer to computer without a problem. Remote Desktop Services

//technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/ee236407.aspx

You dont need it installed if you are just wanting to connect to basic computers and servers via RDP.

But you will have to make sure the GPO on the machines are set to allow Remote Desktop Connections [which is simple]

Reset 120 day RDS Grace period on 2016 and 2019

If you have a home lab environment or other lab that you continually test various solutions, licensing and trial expiration is a challenge that you constantly tend to run into. It is just part of the fun of lab environments. While most trials are fairly “hard and fast” and don’t allow you to reset the trial expiration, if you work with Microsoft Windows Server and Remote Desktop Services [RDS], there is a “hack” that allows you to effectively reset the expiration of Remote Desktop Services grace period where you can essentially rewind the clock on your RDS licensing if you are making use of this role inside your lab environment. In my lab environment, I am making use of Windows Server 2019 for my Windows workloads. In this post, I will show how to reset 120 day RDS Grace period on 2016 and 2019 Windows Server. Let’s see.

What causes the error “Licensing Mode for Remote Desktop Session Host is not Configured” ?

While trying to configure a new RDSH node in the RDS Windows Server we may face a warning popup message as shown below:

From the error message, the Remote Desktop Session[RDS] Host is running in the grace period [during the grace period of 120 days, we can use the Remote Desktop Session Host without activating RDS licenses].

When the grace period ends, users will not be able to connect to the host, and an error will appear in the tray:

Remote Desktop Services will stop working because this computer is past grace period and has not contacted at least a valid Windows Server 2012 license server. Click this message to open RD Session Host Server Configuration to use Licensing Diagnosis.
