The refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition tops our rankings of the best full-size SUVs in large part because of its engine, the most powerful in the class. In a segment dominated by V8s, Ford has the only twin-turbo V6. Being down two cylinders doesn’t hurt the Ford, though – it has top fuel economy, power, and towing capacity. It has less space than the Chevrolets and GMCs on this list, though opting for the Expedition Max trim helps. The Expedition Max is a longer version of the Expedition with more third-row and cargo space.

Ford gave the Expedition fresh styling, a larger touchscreen, and more power for 2022, but the underlying vehicle remains the same as it has been since 2018. Any models from 2018 or later will be similar.

While its towing, horsepower, and fuel economy stats are all middling, its massive cabin propels it to the upper echelons of the large SUV class. Opting for the larger V8 engine option fixes its power deficit. The Suburban is also available with a diesel engine, an option that is unavailable in most other SUVs. The diesel gives the Suburban great towing capacity and fuel economy. The Suburban is basically a longer version of the Chevrolet Tahoe, which places third on this list. It’s also nearly identical to the GMC Yukon XL, which places fourth.

The Jeep Wagoneer is a brand-new 3-row SUV that’s priced near the top of the full-size SUV class. It’s based on the Ram 1500 pickup truck, so it isn’t exactly light on its feet. However, that tough background yields an impressive 10,000 pounds of towing capacity, plus decent off-road chops with the right options. The Jeep Wagoneer’s 18 mpg is decent when you consider its huge towing limit and 392-horsepower V8. It has 116.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is well above average. The Grand Wagoneer is a more powerful and much more expensive version of the Wagoneer.

There are a few used Jeep Wagoneers on the market already, but the model just debuted for 2022, so used inventories will be low until it has been around longer.

4. 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe is nearly identical to the Chevrolet Suburban (listed above) and GMC Yukon (listed below). It’s smaller than the Suburban and not that much cheaper, which is why it places lower in our best large SUV ranking. It beats the Yukon because it offers mostly the same equipment for less money. Like both of those vehicles, the Tahoe is spacious but not particularly powerful or fuel-efficient with its base V8, which generates 355 horsepower. A larger V8 option has more horsepower (420) but worse fuel economy. The other engine option, a diesel, has more towing power and better fuel economy.

The Yukon XL is a longer version of the Yukon. It has the same specs as the Chevrolet Suburban but is more expensive. Along with the Tahoe and the Suburban, the Yukon has the weakest base V8 of any new large SUV. However, the optional 420-horsepower V8 addresses that issue. The optional diesel engine yields great towing power and fuel economy.

The Dodge Durango is the only crossover SUV in our best large SUV ranking, meaning it’s built like a car instead of a truck. It corners better than most vehicles on this list and has a sportier driving feel overall.

The Durango is usually considered a midsize SUV, but we included it in this large SUV ranking because it’s available with powerful V8 engines and has excellent towing capabilities – better than most of the SUVs on this list. Because of its midsize roots, it is smaller than the full-size SUVs listed here and it ranks lower. However, it’s a solid choice for buyers who want bold styling, a sporty driving experience, and a modestly sized cargo hold.
