Chrome seems to pause when switching between tabs after driver update

I updated my drivers via Avast earlier today and I was watching YouTube at the time. Suddenly, the screen went black for a few moments before returning. Avast prompted me to restart which I did.
Since then, Chrome has been slow and seems to pause when I switch tabs, try to scroll down a page, hover over a hyperlink etc. It's particularly noticeable if I'm viewing a tab on one side of my screen and have YouTube open on the other side. The video seems to freeze but the audio continues. Eventually the video jumps to catch up with the audio.
I've tried restarting, did a clean up via Avast, done a few scans and nothing's helped.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
Edit: I've reinstalled Chrome and so far that seems to have worked.
