"Pay us a visit" sounds normal, Abcd. I don't know why or when people began to use "pay" with "visit", but that combination is now customary.
To pay [someone] a visit is a standard phrase. To make someone a visit is not – it does not make sense.
The way you’ve used visit [as a verb] in your explanation is fine: Why don’t you visit us?

But.. can I say something like: "The minister made a visit to the work area"?
I'm not sure I agree with that.
I made a visit to Tuscany last year.
I think when you use paid it has to be referring to a person or a group of people. "Made" seems suitable for a reference to a geographic area.
