Unlike the natural reef environment, where there is an immense reservoir of the foundation elements, the reef aquarium has limited resources that are quickly depleted by the aquarium inhabitants. Therefore, in order to enable sustainable coral growth it is necessary to maintain higher than natural levels of the foundation elements. Original research carried out in Red Sea’s laboratory has shown that in a closed system [an aquarium] a specific ratio between the foundation elements of calcium, magnesium and carbonates [alkalinity] is necessary for coral vitality and the formation of a robust aragonite coral skeleton. This ratio must be maintained especially when increasing the levels of the foundation elements above the natural sea levels. How long do you mix Red Sea Coral Pro salt?
For example, Red Sea Coral Pro has elevated levels of calcium and alkalinity that will actually precipitate out of the solution if left to mix for too long; Red Sea recommends you only mix this particular salt mix for 4 hours.
Is Red Sea Salt good for you?
NUTRIENT RICH: Hawaiian red Alaea sea salt is comprised of some 80 natural elements, electrolytes and trace minerals, like potassium and magnesium. Red alaea is also rich in iron oxides, which makes for a great digestible form of dietary iron. Not only is this salt mineral rich but its rich in flavor too.
How many cups of Red Sea Coral Pro salt per 5 gallons?
I typically start with 1/2 cup per gallon of RODI. That gets me right in the 1.025 range, I'll adjust it from there after it has mixed for a bit. Typically I try and overshoot by just a bit, as adding more RODI to bring the salinity down is easier. Hope that helps.
Is red sea salt better than instant ocean?
It depends on what you're going to keep in your tank. If you go with a FOWLR or softies then the IO is great salt. If you're going keep SPS then the Red Sea is better, IMO, because it has elevated Ca, ALK and Mg.
