Location
On a remote stretch of Ong Lang beach, Mango Bay Resort offers a great getaway that's also remote from the restaurants and other resorts of the island. You’ll likely spend most nights at the resort rather than bothering with the hassle of heading elsewhere.
Design, ambience and people
Mango Bay Resort occupies a vast tract of largely unspoiled rocky coast that boasts a couple of picturesque small coves for swimming. Its low impact bungalows are sparsely set throughout the generous grounds. It’s a genuine escape and all guests have plenty of access to the vast stretch of beautiful, untouched, rocky coastline.
The grounds never feel crowded - but you’ll definitely collide with your fellow guests in the open air restaurant.
Bungalows are humbly fitted out - no air con, phone, TV, mini bar etc. All bungalows have balconies and views.
There's a curious cluster of Vietnamese graves near the northern beach and restaurant that reminds that the land was previously inhabited.
Mango Bay boasts of its eco friendly credentials. In-room power consumption by guests is mandatorily limited by the single electrical appliance - the light. Hot water is solar powered. The newest rooms are made of rammed earth which is touted by the owners as both an environmentally sustainable and attractive building material. The 44 bungalows come in a range of categories - all spartan but tasteful and built with local materials. The lead-in bungalows are 35sqm and all have balconies.
This place should be 100% renewable by now - and we hope it happens soon. Phu Quoc has its first 100% solar resort already [Bamboo Cottages]. Mango Bay's the most expensive of the low-impact resorts so hopefully they'll find some cash for this investment soon.
The restaurant’s food and prices are good, though the range of options is limited for those staying longer than a few days. Bo and Chen Sea Resorts are reasonably close by for those needing a menu change but you'll need to be ready to jump on a motorbike or wait 20 minutes for a cab. There are some other smaller restaurants just outside too.

Its gorgeous 44 rooms and villas have been designed to be all-around low-impact, with no air-conditioning, no TVs, hot water provided by solar power, and cooler boxes instead of minibars. While the focus here is on relaxation, there is plenty to keep guests active, including a small spa, free yoga and tai-chi classes, free non-motorized water sports, loaner bikes, and free shuttle service to Duong Dong. The restaurant serves excellent Asian cuisine in an open pavilion built directly on the rocks overlooking the sea, and the beach bar is a popular spot for sunset drinks and tapas. The hotel offers direct access to three sandy bays, but there is no pool on-site. The more remote Bamboo Cottages & Restaurant is an excellent option for an even more unplugged vacation.

The property is within walking distance of a few casual restaurants and cafes, but a wider array of dining and shopping options can be found in Duong Dong, located about a 25-minute drive away. The town’s night market selling everything from pearls to souvenirs to fresh seafood is one of the island’s most popular non-beach attractions. The hotel offers free shuttle service to the city center. Stunning Sao Beach is an hour away by car, and the airport is about 40 minutes from the hotel. The hotel can arrange airport pick-up and drop-off services for a fee.

Mango Bay Resort has a total of 44 rooms, including five double rooms for couples and solo travelers, and 39 larger villas of up to 2,580 square feet and two bedrooms. All are decorated in a simple yet upscale style, with natural materials such as stone, terra-cotta, and wood, and cute rustic-chic details, including small throw pillows with geometrical patterns in pastel colors, and four-poster beds with mosquito nets. The 323-square-foot Veranda Rooms are the simplest and smallest of all, with a large terrace shared with four other rooms, terra-cotta floors, and just a four-poster bed, a few wooden shelves, and a desk. Sliding doors open onto appealing indoor bathrooms with great rain showers, lots of stone and wood accents, and natural toiletries in large ceramic containers.
All other room types at Mango Bay Resort are stand-alone villas housed in thatched buildings, with huge, private terraces, and gorgeous outdoor bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi, 100 percent cotton sheets [changed on request only to save water and energy], safes, beach bags, and flip-flops are standard amenities, and water jugs and thermos are provided in all rooms instead of mineral or purified water in plastic bottles.
In an effort to minimize the use of electricity, rooms lack air-conditioning, TVs, phones, and minibars, but all come equipped with fans to help keep them cool. Cooler boxes are also provided in all but Veranda Rooms, and Bay View Villas feature small, energy-efficient mini-fridges in the living room. Master bedrooms in these villas also come equipped with a cutting-edge cooling technology that uses 0.6 kilowatt-hours, as opposed to the 3,000 kilowatt-hours air-conditioning units use on average.
