What is a coordinated set of fonts styles and colors?

Styles save you time and help make your document look good. When you use styles to create a document, you can change how the whole document looks with just a few clicks.

A style is a set of characteristics, such as font name, size, color, paragraph alignment, spacing, borders, and shading.

For example, under Home > Styles, click the Heading 1 style to change text to 18-point, Segoe UI in one click. You don’t have to remember the font, size, or paragraph spacing, just click Heading 1 wherever you want the same style of heading.

Word for the web styles are coordinated to work together, just like in the Word desktop application. Quickly apply any style in Home > Styles with just one click

Note: You can’t add new styles or edit the built-in styles in Word for the web the way you can in the Word desktop application.

If you have the Word desktop application, use the Open in Desktop App command to open the document and use it to create and edit styles.

If you don’t have Word, you can try or buy it in the latest version of Office now.

Word for the web works seamlessly with Word and other Office desktop programs, and we update it based on input like yours. For the latest feature announcements, visit the Office Web Apps blog.

Word’s document themes provide a consistent and professional look for your documents. Each document theme consists of three design elements:

  • Theme Colors: A set of coordinated colors used in formatting text and objects in the document. These colors define what you see when you open the Color menu.
  • Theme Fonts: A set of coordinated heading and body font types.
  • Theme Effects: A set of coordinated formatting properties for shapes and objects.

Apply a Theme

  1. Click the Design tab.
  2. Click the Themes button.
  3. The Themes gallery opens. Each thumbnail previews the theme’s fonts and colors.

  4. Select a theme.

The theme is applied, and the colors, fonts, and effects of the document are changed.

If some text or graphics aren’t changing with the theme the way you expect, make sure the text is using Theme Fonts and the objects are using Theme Colors.

If a theme is saved elsewhere on your computer or network location, click Browse for Themes to locate the theme.

Customize a Theme

If you like most of a theme's look, but still want to change something about it, you can change color and font sets as well.

  1. Click the Colors button on the Design tab.
  2. Each color set listed here shows a small preview of the text, background, and accent colors in that set. Any text and shapes that are using theme colors will be affected by a change here.

  3. Select a color set.

  4. Anything set to use theme colors, such as heading text or shapes, will be updated.

Changing font sets works the same way.

  5. Click the Fonts button.
  6. Each font set shows the Heading and Body font it contains. Any text using theme heading and body fonts will be updated.

  7. Select a font set.

Both the body text and the headings are updated.
