“Joker” is nothing but a comedy, and the return of Joaquin Phoenix as “Batman” baddie Arthur Fleck is more than highly anticipated.

Phoenix reprises the titular role after the 2019 origin story, directed by Todd Phillips and co-penned by Scott Silver (“The Fighter”). Phoenix landed a Best Actor Oscar win for Gotham City corruption story that used “King of Comedy” tendencies and “Taxi Driver” aesthetics to convey the rot and the bile behind the rise of mega-millionaire political family the Waynes, while would-be Batman, Bruce Wayne (Dante Pereira-Olson), grows up parentless. Add in a few nods to the fact that maybe Arthur (Phoenix) may be half-siblings with Bruce, and the twisted entanglement between Joker and Batman goes deeper than other typical DC superhero films.

“Joker” was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2019 after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The film made history as the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide. Phoenix went on to take home an Academy Award for Best Actor, along with Hildur Guðnadóttir earning an Oscar for Best Original Score. “Joker” landed 11 nominations overall.

Phillips confirmed a “Joker” sequel in June 2022 with an Instagram post teasing the title. The film is set to be released October 4, 2024 from Warner Bros.

• Zazie Beetz Expected to Return as Sophie

  Image Credit: AP Call it an imagined ménage à trois? “Joker: Folie à Deux” may mark the return of Zazie Beetz as Arthur’s neighbor Sophie, with whom he dreams up a romantic relationship. While Sophie was implied to be killed by Arthur during his murderous romp as Joker, reported that Beetz is currently in talks to reprise her role. The “Atlanta” star also recently gushed about why the musical aspect for the sequel film “makes wonderful sense” and wasn’t a surprise at all. “Todd [Phillips] has always had a creative approach to the character,” Beetz told The Hollywood Reporter (via ScreenRant). “I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy. And I can actually see that within myself as well, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me.” She added, “I can see Arthur [Fleck], who is feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He’s the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me.”

An animated teaser set to Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek” seems to expand on the dance elements of the first movie, and no doubt will put Grammy winner Gaga’s voice on display. Writer-director Todd Phillips previously told IndieWire’s Anne Thompson that it was lead actor Joaquin Phoenix’s idea to dance in the pivotal public bathroom scene after committing his first murder. Phoenix also told Anderson Cooper on “60 Minutes” that he felt like Arthur aka Joker “had moved way past that and that there was the opportunity to express something else, but I didn’t know precisely what that was…I thought there was some kind of movement, some physical transformation, right? A metamorphosis.” Phillips eventually brought in choreographer Michael Arnold, who also worked on “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “The Post,” and “The Irishman.” Arnold introduced Phoenix to videos of vaudeville performer Ray Bolger, whose dance technique informed Joker’s unique movements.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Salary Is Five Times More for the Sequel

After Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for leading “Joker,” the actor’s salary has increased five-times fold. Per a Variety report, Phoenix earned $4.5 million for the first 2019 film. Its sequel lands Phoenix at least a $20 million paycheck, Oscar statue in tow.

Variety also reported that Lady Gaga will be making $10 million, half of Phoenix’s salary, for her co-lead role. The sequel is estimated to cost approximately $150 million to produce.
