Theyre really similar in meaning, most times you could use either.
I tried to think of situations where I could only use one. I cant figure out why exactly, I just know them.
The wolfs fur was matted and stiff with dried blood. You wouldnt say the wolfs fur was rigid, only stiff.
The old beach towel was stiff from salt. This ones weirder to me, because you could say the towel was rigid, but that would mean it was hard as a board. Stiff just means theres some resistance. If you were beating egg whites for meringue, you would say the peaks [parts of egg foam that stick up] were stiff, but not rigid.
If you say someone is stiff [meaning their personality] that means theyre uptight, overly formal. If you say theyre rigid [again, meaning their personality] that means theyre authoritarian or obsessive in their routines.
But other uses, The man had gone stiff with terror, / The man had gone rigid with terror, mean exactly the same thing.
Stiff can also be used as a noun, as slang for a dead body. Rigid cant.
I really had to think on it because they almost always mean the same thing. English has a lot of words that have the same meanings. We often use them to avoid repetition.
