Overview

Mercedes has signaled plans to streamline the brand's U.S. portfolio, and the CLS, now down to a single trim level, could be among the casualties. If so, it would cap a remarkable, nearly 20-year run for a model that introduced a new body style — the four-door coupe — subsequently copied throughout the automotive world. Models ranging from the Kia Stinger to the Porsche Panamera owe a design debt to the CLS, which proved buyers like four-door convenience with the look of a sleek two-door.

With a turbocharged engine and an auxiliary electric motor for boosting low-speed power, the CLS accelerates quickly and smoothly. Driver-selectable ride settings give it outstanding highway comfort with reasonable cornering ability, although its size is a limiting factor during more enthusiastic driving.

Elegant interior materials make the CLS feel like a proper luxury car and are complemented by a class-leading infotainment system with sophisticated voice controls. Once familiar with the system, you'll rarely need to touch a screen. Of course, the CLS' striking style comes at a cost to rear passengers, who may feel the pinch of the car's sloping roofline. Up front, there's plenty of head- and legroom.

The CLS comes with many technology and safety features, and it offers plenty of optional equipment as well. Starting at $75K, the Mercedes-Benz CLS is actually one of the more affordable options in its class. Its closest competitor, the BMW 8 Series, is priced at just over $88K. Another alternative is the Audi A7, priced from $70K. Although today's CLS may be on its way out, its influence will likely live on. Reports suggest Mercedes may retain the same proportions for a smaller, coupe-style version of the next-generation E-Class sedan.

Pros

Strong and smooth six-cylinder engine. Refined and futuristic interior. User-friendly infotainment system is among the best available.

Cons

Sleek coupe profile makes for a tight backseat and small trunk.

Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz CLS blends streamlined coupe style with four-door sedan utility. It's a striking look, but passengers may question the execution given the tight rear quarters. A silky six-cylinder engine and elegant cabin impart signature Mercedes-Benz luxury.

What's New for 2023

Several metallic paint finishes are now offered at no additional cost.

Trims and Pricing

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS is sold in one trim: CLS 450 4Matic.

450 4Matic

Starting at $75,400 (including a $1,050 destination fee), the CLS 450 4Matic comes with a 362-horsepower six-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and an AMG appearance package. Standard features include 19-inch wheels, a sport exhaust system, a sunroof, customizable cabin lighting, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Driver-assist and safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, automatic high beams, and crosswind stability assist.

Upscale options include 20-inch wheels, soft-closing doors, a heated steering wheel and front armrests, ventilated and massaging front seats, a power rear-window sunshade, a head-up display, and a wireless device charger.

Additionally, the Premium package adds satellite radio, a 13-speaker Burmester surround-sound audio system, a surround-view camera, and an automatic parking system. Several more driver aids come bundled with the Driver Assistance package: adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping and lane-centering assist, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, and evasive steering assist, which aids stability after a sharp and unexpected steering maneuver.

Engine and Performance

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS delivers a lively ride with its 362-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder. A mild-hybrid assist — Mercedes calls it EQ Boost — gives a dab more power in certain driving situations. The powertrain is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Despite its large size, the CLS zooms from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is faster than most rivals. The BMW 8 Series zips to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds using a 335-hp inline-six turbo engine. A smooth, controlled ride makes the CLS a great long-distance cruiser. It can handle spirited driving but is a little too big to feel nimble.

Fuel Economy

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS returns Environmental Protection Agency estimates of 22 mpg during city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. Those are among the best figures in the class. The BMW 8 Series and Audi A7 deliver 22/29 mpg city/highway.

Interior

Inside, the CLS provides trademark Mercedes-Benz elegance. The quiet interior seats five and is trimmed with top-notch leather and natural wood. Seats are plush and there are plenty of options, including a heated steering wheel, massaging front seats, and AMG-inspired upholstery and trim.

The CLS' rivals are also suitably luxurious, but the BMW 8 Series stands out with its soft Merino leather upholstery and the smooth leather finish of its instrument panel. The CLS is roomy up front, but the back row provides less head- and legroom than the Audi A7. With just 11.9 cubic feet of trunk space, the CLS has one of the smallest trunks in its class.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS features a user-friendly MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Users operate the system via a touchpad controller or voice command. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation are standard. Many rivals are similarly equipped, with the Audi A7 adding a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS has not undergone crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The CLS comes with several advanced safety features, including automatic braking, blind-spot warning, crosswind assist, and automatic high beams. A bundle of optional aids includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping and lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, and several pre-collision measures to reduce the severity of impacts.

Mercedes-Benz CLS vs. the Competition

Undeniably elegant, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS also displays the markings of a daredevil, with speed, acceleration, and plenty of power. The BMW 8 Series, with exceptional handling, quick speed, and an attractive cabin, is a formidable competitor, even at a higher price. The Audi A7 performs well, sports a handsome cabin, and costs about the same as the CLS.

Will there be a 2023 CLS?

Under the hood, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS will only be available with one engine. A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system will be standard. Power should continue to be rated at 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive will be standard.

Is there a new Mercedes CLS coming out?

For 2022, the base rear-wheel-drive CLS 450 and more powerful AMG CLS 53 have been pulled from the lineup, leaving the all-wheel-drive CLS 450 4Matic as the sole representative.

What will replace Mercedes CLS?

They will be replaced by the all-new two-door CLE and this new four-door coupe could also be part of the future CLE family.

Is Mercedes getting rid of the CLS?

For 2022, Mercedes is dropping the rear-drive version of the CLS450 as well as the 429-hp AMG-tuned CLS53.
