“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” is director Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s short story. The 40-minute film has some smoking and death (by natural causes), but its messages are overwhelmingly positive, with characters who learn to control their minds and their more selfish impulses. The film stars an all-British cast (Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley and Dev Patel), including two actors of Gujarati Indian descent and another of Nigerian heritage. The story takes place between London and Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. An Indian yogi teaches the art of concentrating the mind. There are no female characters with spoken lines, and the portrayal of a wise yogi levitating in the Indian jungle (and mention of circus acts like snake charmers and sword swallowers) strays into stereotype territory. (40 minutes)

Available on Netflix.

Loki, Season 2 (TV-14)

Streaming

Age 11+

Charming romp through time has lots of action violence.

“Loki” is a time-travel sci-fi series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” (consider that your spoiler alert). It centers on the trickster god featured in many Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, a fan-favorite MCU character played by Tom Hiddleston. Expect lots of comic book-style action violence, including stabbings, disintegrations, limb loss (with light blood) and hand-to-hand combat — and the fate of the universe is always in peril. Many of Loki’s kills from previous films are replayed, as is Thanos’s brutal destruction. Words like “dammit” and “hell” are used, and there’s infrequent implied nudity, but all sensitive body parts are covered. Characters have sexual tension and eventually kiss. Adults sip cocktails and champagne in social settings. On their journey, characters like Loki and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) demonstrate humility, teamwork and self-control. (Six hour-long episodes)

Available on Disney Plus.

Krapopolis (TV-14)

Streaming

Age 14+

Animated comedy set in ancient Greece has body humor, gore.

“Krapopolis” is an animated comedy for adults created by Dan Harmon (“Community,” “Rick and Morty”). Centered on a fledgling civilization in ancient Greece, the series has satirical violence and gore (for example, severed heads with dripping blood and conflicts between armies), as well as sexual and body part humor. Characters drink “nectar” instead of alcohol (but for the same reason), and language includes “a--,” “damn,” “hell” and more. Characters show empathy, creativity and loyalty, and there are messages about communication, family and community. (22-minute episodes)

Available on Hulu.

Totally Killer (R)

Streaming

Age 15+

Teen horror-comedy has language, violence, sex, drinking.

“Totally Killer” is a horror-comedy in which a teen girl (Kiernan Shipka) time-travels back to 1987 to stop a serial killer. It’s funny, but you can expect graphic violence: The serial killer is known for stabbing his victims 16 times. There are blood puddles and splatters, as well as enhanced stabbing sound effects, and a news reporter is stabbed in the head during a live broadcast. There’s also some bullying: Popular kids make fun of many of their fellow high school students. Teens get a girl drunk at a sleepover, and she drives home drunk to escape the bullying and gets in a fatal accident. Teens binge drink — wine coolers and vodka, especially — smoke weed, eat pot brownies and smoke cigarettes. Strong language throughout includes “f-” and “motherf-er.” Characters talk about sex, particularly oral sex, and in one scene, two teens are on the verge of having sex on a water bed at a party. (106 minutes)

Available on Prime Video.

If you are a mom who wants to keep your son or daughter away from all the bad in the world, don’t show them this until they’ve graduated from college. For everyone else, it is exactly as crass as all the films that came before it in this franchise. It is also very sweet. Total family film. For most of the 4-ish hours...not recommended for toddlers.

It is a movie: but life is reflected in this movie.

Just finished watching Avengers:Endgame again. When I was 20 I would have just cheered and yelled, Yea…the good guys won!! Now as an old person, instead I shed a few tears for the ones who sacrificed so much to save loved ones, I rejoice in seeing evil defeated but feel remorse and sorrow for those who lives it affected. One thinks wow, I wish I could have been there on the winning side, but not sure if I had the fortitude to make a difference. I am glad for the difference between young and old…maybe I get to take a bit of learned wisdom from the years of life with me when it is my turn. So i think this is a good movie for anyone over the age of 8.

A very good movie for tweens

The movie was great and was violent but not to strong that it would give anyone over the age of 7 nightmares. The language wasn’t to bad and it wasn’t a bad movie. Actually it was a great movie.

do we remember when MCU was actually well???

It was a very nice movie!!! It should be a reminder that the MCU can be good, now it's important to know that it's broken. The only downside is that the Audi E-Tron GT sounds incredibly loud for an electric car.

Is Avengers: Endgame suitable for 7 year old?

The movie is both funny and emotionally poignant, with the stories of many much-loved characters coming to an end. Children aged over 13 years are likely to really enjoy Avengers: Endgame, although we recommend parental guidance because of the amount of violence and destruction in the movie.

Is Avengers appropriate for 10 year old?

The Avengers is an action adventure bringing together a number of Marvel's most famous superhero characters. It is targeted at adolescent males and adult fans of Marvel comics. It contains violence and scary scenes which make it unsuitable for children and some younger teens.
