Anker has been busy updating (June 2017) its already excellent Bluetooth speaker range, adding the new SoundCore 2, SoundCore Boost and SoundCore Pro. This review focuses on the SoundCore Pro which Anker recently sent me for testing and review.

WOW, I really wasn’t expecting such a powerful clear sound from such a small speaker. It delivers awesome powerful bass, more so than the A3143 I already own. I was genuinely taken aback by the clarity & power of this small speaker, I’m amazed how such a small speaker can deliver such a powerful room filling sound. I tried several genres of music – rock, pop, classical etc. and the speaker delivered great audio on everything I tried, its well-balanced across the whole audio frequency spectrum from about 65Hz up to 20KHz via bluetooth 4.2, NFC or aux input. I couldn’t hear any distortion even at high volume levels.

This new speaker has several new features, including NFC and a USB output to charge up other devices (5V/2A max output) from the speakers in-built 8000mAh battery – this means you can charge your device (phone, tablet etc) and play music at the same time, a really nice feature. The SoundCore Pro delivers up to 25 Watts of music power from 2 full-range drivers and 2 tweeters, more than enough to fill my lounge with music. It also boasts an IPX4 rating, so good for accidental splashes or the odd light shower – all the connections are covered by a rubber guard that is easily released to enable access. The huge 8000mAh of battery will power the speaker for up to 18hrs! The top and bottom of the speaker is of a nice rubberised matte finish, with the central body covered by a fine metal mesh all around the main part of the speaker. The base has 4 small rubber feet in the corners.

The top of the SoundCore Pro has 5 soft touch buttons – on/off, volume up, play/pause, volume down and bluetooth pairing. Some of the buttons have dual functions, for example the play button can be used to answer incoming calls on your connected mobile phone, and yes the speaker also has a built-in microphone. Calls can be answered, rejected or placed on hold by pressing the play button for a set time or number of presses – all explained in the owner’s manual supplied with the speaker. There are also 4 LEDs on the top left of the speaker to indicate battery level remaining or charge level, the speaker came with about 50 to 75% charge (3 LEDs lit) probably nearer 75% as the speaker only took about 40 minutes to fully charge. All the LEDs go off when fully charged, but charge status can be checked with quick press of power button.

The SoundCore Pro came very well packaged as with all Anker products I’ve bought. It feels satisfyingly solid & robust in the hand and yet is very compact weighing 763 grams. Its external dimensions are approx. 204 x 72 x 69mm, the package includes a micro-USB charging cable, although no audio aux input cable was provided. Bluetooth is version 4.2. It comes with the excellent Anker 18 month warranty and user guide.

Pro’s

Powerful 25 Watt speaker (2x 12.5 Watt speakers)

Great build quality and finish with IPX4 rating

NFC compatible

Very good frequency range of 65 Hz to 20 kHz from such a small speaker

Up to 18Hrs of music playback (depending on volume level)

Can be used to charge devices from USB output (2A max output)

Able to answer phone calls, speaker has built in microphone

Rechargeable via supplied micro-USB cable (2A max input for fast charging)

Con’s

A very slight niggle, but not affecting functionality – All the other Anker speakers I’ve used (A3143 and SoundCore) work flawlessly with my Amazon DOTs and other devices. However I noticed the SoundCore Pro seems to have a slight delay (presumably coming out of some sort of power-saving audio standby mode) with initial audio output after not being used for a while (although connected via bluetooth). If, after some time of no speaker use I ask Amazon DOT ‘what’s the time’, the speaker will miss the initial reply on audio output, however after the initial delay (and speaker audio fully on) everything works well. I assume this is some kind of audio ‘standby’ mode on this new SoundCore Pro speaker. Not a big deal for me, as everything is good after initial speaker audio use.

Not fully compatible with Amazon Dot / Echo – while it does work with both, it will auto-off after some time without input.

No audio aux input cable provided, but these are generally easily available at low cost on the high street.

Summary

The SoundCore Pro is Ankers newest premium speaker and is up there with the best (but at a much lower cost), delivering excellent audio clarity with powerful bass delivery. There are many Bluetooth speakers in the market, but the Anker SoundCore Pro will be hard to beat given its power delivery, quality and price point. I definitely recommend this speaker.
