I've grown really fond of this lens for live event photography. In my opinion the 85mm focal length on full frame is great for capturing performers from a variety of distances from the stage. I find when shooting full frame of a stage in a smaller venue, that the 135mm focal length is often too cropped, and 50mm often feels too wide for my preferred type of shots/compositions.

My three favourite lenses for live shooting are the Sony 135mm F1.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Sonnar T*, Sony 85mm F1.4 ZA Carl Zeiss Planar T* and the Sony 50mm F1.4 ZA Carl Zeiss Planar T*. I would be really stuck to only pick two of those to go out with me, as silly as it may sound. While logically the 50mm would cover the 85mm focal length with a bit of cropping, I am reluctant to leave my 85 at home, and am often rewarded for bringing it. Also worth mentioning is that copping a high ISO image results in bigger noise. I like to avoid that as much as possible, so lean towards higher focal lengths rather than cropping a lot in post.

Each of these lenses have their own benefits, and I'd say the 85's are all in overall magic optics and sharpness. It lacks SSM focus, weather sealing, and has a reputation for purple fringing in high contrast situations. BUT, what it does get right, the Sony 50mm 1.4 ZA Zeiss Planar T* can't quite match if you ask me. The Sony 135mm F1.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* is without doubt the best optically of the three, but the focal length is often too long and the lens tends to focus hunt more than the other two. I adore the Sony 50mm F1.4 ZA Carl Zeiss Planar T* - it stays on my camera day-to-day and is my all-round favourite lens and focal length. To me, though, carrying the 50mm does not replace my need to carry the 85mm as well.

When it comes to the 85, I would only ever trade this lens for an updated version, and always I'll carry it with me in hopes of it being the right lens for the shoot. Some have said in reviews that they find this lens softer than the 135, but I have been astonished at how sharp my copy is. I've shot at f1.4, handheld in low light of a lively set of performers and been able to 100% crop down to razor-sharp hair on people's arms and razor-sharp eyelashes! Zeiss really seem to know how to get amazing sharpness from a wide-aperture lens, while also rendering stunning bokeh and overall breath-taking image quality.

I'd love to hear what others think of this lens too, and what you like to use it for other than "headshot" portraits....?

I agree with you. I use 85mm f1.4 in backstage photography. Focuses even better than new SSM 24-70 Zeiss.

Jeremy, I have the Minolta version, bought new a long time ago. One of my favorite lenses. Here's one wide open showing really shallow depth. Only processing was slight crop.

I agree with the review. I have owned the 85 and 135. The 135 is optically the better lens. You'll notice it if shooting both of them. The 85 is extremely good, the 135 is in the top 5 lenses I have shot on FF. It's also a more exotic lens (it's like an 85 1.2). Also, the 135 has a surprisingly wonderful MFD. Having said that, the 85 is 95% the 135, a preferred FL for me, much smaller and a little cheaper. I sold all my a-mount lenses, but I kept this guy It's also great at near, mid, and infinity--not something all lenses accomplish.

I like it better than the Mino, Sigma, Canon or Nikon fast 85s. Just a fabulous fabulous lens. If you keep you're eyes open, you can get it not the used market in great shape for $1,200 or under. And if you are thinking about it, do it!

I would like to ask for your opinion on the Sony 85mm F1.4 ZA Zeiss Planar T*.

Can you advise on how this lens compares with the Sony 135mm F1.8 on image quality?

I am seriously concerned with chromatic fringe on hard focused dark against bright background, and also the appearance of color fringe in out of focus background or foreground?

As you must know this will most always appear greater near the edges of a photo.

I have owned the Sony 135mm ZA for many years, and it is absolutely clean as far as I am able to see in my photos.

My reason for the interest in this 85mm Sony Zeiss is the weight of the longer lens along with the weight of the a900 body . It probably takes a gorilla to hold them steady , and it would never stay where I aim it on my tripod even when I tighten the mounting nut with a pipe wrench. What I mean is that my finger and thumb are about to break and the camera will still keep drooping down in front. (The tripod is useless too).

So, bottom line, I need a much lighter weight lens for ease of use.

I am completely spoiled by the Sony Zeiss 135 image. Can't go back to something less.
