Year ago, I purchased the MX500, followed by MX300. They sounded too bright to me, but not especially bad. The MX500 were more refined in treble range, but differences were minimal on both. I sold them both after some time (2 months), thinking the Porta Pro and KSC-35 suit my ears more. But now, after more than year, I purchased MX400 and following this, sold my Porta Pro. (keeping my good old KSC-35) Why?

Well, I think my mind adjusted to the less bassy nature of MDR-F1 and MX-*00 series and nowadays I found the Koss Portas too bassy for me. The KSC-35 I have are modded to be less bass heavy - circle hole in the foam. I measured the MX400 and what happened? They have perfectly matched drivers, like the HD-600 and MDR-F1. No other cheaper cans (Porta Pro, KSC-35, Panasonic earbuds, Sony verticals A34) are so close in response like the little Senns. Maybe I've been lucky, the QC of cheaper Senns (made in China) seems bad according to majority of people here. Still, I think the fast, neutral and universal sound is a small miracle in such a small, cheap earphones like MX400 (and 500 of course)

Nice day... Moonwalker

I was quite pleased with my MX400's as well. Only cost me $25 CDN from happy shack =) They're tying me over until my HD-600's come in the middle of next week some time.

MDR-F1 vs MX400..... that would be the most hillarious comparison review ever.......

PLEASE hook

I agree Moonwalker...

My little MX400s are getting more use than any of my other headphones at the moment... and thats not just because I spend most of my time out on the road... if that were the case, I have my ETYs......................................

The Portapros are too bassy. The KSC50 is the least bassy of the portapro line. I've been listening to the Senn 280s recently, which perhaps have retuned my ears to expect less bass emphasis. I decided to get my MX400s from the office drawer and try them again. They do sound good -- in fact, I'm not sure if they're sounding any worse than 280s. Maybe I'll take them home and do a comparison.

Well, the MX400s don't really sound as good as the 280 Pros. I think I could be forgiven for thinking they might be sitting at my desk at work under the heating vent (constant whoosh...). The MX400 is pretty darn good. I mean, I don't know if my mother could tell the difference...

so are you guys saying that the mx series made elsewhere other than China will sound better?

because the one we have is made in China, a pair not to be raved about.

That's strange question. I know the MX series are made ONLY in CHINA, so speculating where in the world may improve QC is giving us no good. I only said my pair of MX400 has nicely matched drivers (random factor at work???) and the sound, while a bit light on bass, was smooth and balanced. I prefer the MX400 for most music to Porta Pro and maybe it gives me more satisfaction than the KSC35.

JUST MY OPINION, of course

My MX500s are made in China. I have no problems with that. They are cheap and sound bloody good.

I want to get myself a pair of earbuds. I think about the mx500 alot, but im afraid the sound wont satisfy me.

20 dollars is alot of money. but at the same time, im still very curious to how it sounds vs the mx400.

I'm wondering..is the MX400 cord left sided, or like regular ones (center)?

My mx-400 has a Y-shaped cord.

i love my 400s. 18$ including shipping. i've compared them with everything i had and nothing compared.

Hi!

To answer Daijoubu's question: The MX-x00 series ALWAYS have the Y cord, not the behind-the-neck assymetrical one.

I let the MX400 burn in for several hours, loud enough, just below the clipping level. The sound has changed very little, but the bass comes out now with more 'freedom', and the sound is a little bit less harsh in highs.

I have 2 more pairs now, one for my wife for quiet places, when we want to talk to each other, and one as reserve. The matching of all 3 pairs is still very good, much better than the Koss Plugs, Sony and Panasonic earbuds. Small differences are in bass region, where during sweep tone tests one channel appear to be SLIGHTLY louder than the other. In real music this is not hearable, though.

The rest of the spectra, 250 Hz up to 14.5 kHz is wonderfully identical on both drivers and, more importantly, all the 3 pairs sound THE SAME to me (only the heavily broken-in pair seems softer and more gentle a bit).
