Section 8 waiting list check

Wait List Look-Up for THA Housing Applicants

This look-up tool will only show whether or not you are on a given waitlist and will not provide a position number as it can be misleading. The agency pulls from the waitlist using preferences [working, homeless, disabled, elderly.] Applicants with preferences are pulled before all other applicants. It is important that you keep your information with us up to date.

History

The waitlist for the Housing Choice Voucher Program [formally Section 8 rental assistance] was opened late October 2006 and received over 10,000 applications. All families were placed on the waitlist list based on a lottery system, and then will be pulled from the list by local preferences. The local preferences are as follows: employed 20 hours or more a week, homeless, elderly or disabled.

The Housing Authority acquired the Hillsborough County Housing Program October 1, 2011. The waitlist for Hillsborough County has approximately 12,000 families.

Therefore, combining the City and County waitlist for rental assistance brings the total to approximately 14,000 families. The Tampa Housing Authority [THA] will not be able to re-open the waitlist until these lists have been exhausted. Needless to say, the waitlist for rental assistance is currently closed and may not re-open for another 5-7 years or longer.

Emergency Assistance

The agency does not offer any type of emergency rental assistance. All families will be assisted from the waitlist by order of the lottery and preferences. If the waitlist is closed, you will not be able to apply for rental assistance.

When will I get assistance?

The agency will not be able to predict when an applicant will receive rental assistance. The agency only has 7,495 Housing Choice Vouchers to assist all of Hillsborough County. Therefore, in order to assist someone from the waitlist, someone must leave the Housing Choice Voucher program. Approximately 40 families a month will leave the program for various reasons. This allows for 40 families to be assisted from the waitlist. The agency will pull from the waitlist those families that have a local preference. If a family does not have a local preference, he or she will go back to the waitlist. All families having a local preference will be assisted first.

You have the ability to check your status online at www.thafl.com.

Notice of eligibility

When your name comes to the top of the waitlist, you will be sent a written notification to either provide information or a notice of an appointment. You must attend the appointment or provide information in order to be considered for rental assistance. If two [2] notices are sent without a response, your name will automatically be removed from the waitlist.

Mailing Address

If you are currently on the waitlist it is your responsibility to update your address by providing a written statement of the new address. THA will not accept a verbal report of a change of address. Change of address must be reported to THA and must be in writing. Changing your address at the Post Office will not update your information at THA.
