The LG V30 comes with a comprehensive selection of imaging features and special modes, most of which can be accessed from the mode screen. Unlike most dual-cam equipped phones the LG does not offer a Bokeh or Portrait mode.

However, it features a number of dual-cam specific functions, such as Match Shot which helps you recreate an already existing image or the Popout collage mode. We've had a closer look at those in our G5 and G6 reviews. On this page we take a closer look at some of the other more useful special modes.

Dual-cam zoom

LG's combination of a standard lens with a super-wide-angle is still unusual among dual-camera smartphones but makes the V30 a great option for those who gravitate more toward wide angles than zoom in their photography.

At 120 degrees the super-wide-angle offers a slightly narrower field of view than on the G6, and the 70 degree main camera is a little narrower than the main cameras on most other high-end smartphones. However, put together the two lenses make for a very useful combination.

The camera switches automatically between lenses when zooming, but unlike some other dual-camera zooms, the system does not appear to use any image fusion technology. This means if you are using the wide-angle lens and zoom into your scene, digital zoom is applied to the wide-angle image until the angle of view of the second lens is reached. At this point, the camera app switches to the latter.

As you see in the sample below zooming in further applies digital zoom to the main camera, leading to a noticeable loss of detail, even at 2x magnification.

Panorama mode

The V30's panorama feature is selected on the mode screen and works in the same way as before. A panorama is captured by slowly panning the camera and staying within the framing guidelines that appear on the screen. You can capture full 360-degree circles or stop anytime by hitting the shutter button.

Panoramas can be shot with both lenses but the super-wide-angle tends to produce more immersive images. The mode deals well with changes of brightness and moving subjects in a scene, but when viewed at 100% magnification panorama images shot on the super-wide-angle are noticeably softer than the main-camera counterparts.

Front cam

The V30 comes with a 5MP F2.2 front camera that is capable of achieving good exposures and detail in bright light. As you'd expect a loss of detail is noticeable quickly. Like on the G6, there is a display-flash function for very low light situations.

You can also switch between a normal angle of view for solo-selfies and a wide view for group shots. The latter looks slightly sharper which suggests that for the narrower field of view the image is simply cropped and slightly upscaled again. Overall the front cam does a decent job but some competitors capture better detail with higher resolution sensors and offer advanced front camera features such as a bokeh mode.

Raw

In its Manual mode the V30 is capable of recording DNG Raw files and as you see in the sample below the images can noticeably benefit from a manual Raw conversion. For the example below we adjusted exposure, highlights and shadows and applied some small-diameter sharpening.

The end result shows better tonality, with improved highlight and shadow detail, as well as increased pixel-level detail with more natural textures.

Cine Video

Cine Video offers a range of adjustable video filters and the Point Zoom function.

Cine Video is a new mode on the V30, and includes a number of adjustable video filters that aim to simulate the look of different cinema genres. The filters can be fun to play with and allow for recording footage that sets a certain mood. But overall it's nothing too special.

In addition to the filters the mode offers a Point Zoom feature that allows for zooming into a specific subject in the scene, rather than the center of the frame. This can create quite a neat effect and is a feature currently unique to the V30 on smartphones.

With Point Zoom activated you set your target by tapping on the screen and zoom in and out using the slider on the right. The latter also controls the zoom speed.

Gallery & Editing

The V30 gallery app is kept very simple and allows you to sort images into albums, view the timeline or filter your favorites. You can also choose to display only videos, or group images into 'memories' based on time stamp and location. Thumbnail size can be varied by pinch-zooming.

In the individual image view you can add memos and share, but there are no built-in editing options. Tapping the edit button lets you choose from any installed image editing apps. The V30 also comes with Google Photos pre-installed and, as usual, Snapseed is a great free third-party option for those who want to perform some on-device image editing before uploading or sharing.
