2023 Nissan Z trunk space

The Japanese sports cars and sport compacts that hit the road throughout the 1990s are models that we often look back on with a nostalgic glimmer in our eyes, but hold the rad trip down nostalgia lane right there. Even if we don’t fully appreciate it in the present, we’re living in another golden age of Japanese sports cars. Either on sale or coming out soon, we have the Acura NSX Type S, Nissan GT-R, Toyota GR Supra, Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ, Subaru WRX, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Honda Civic Si and Type R, Acura Integra and Toyota GR Corolla.

And now, you can add the new 2023 Nissan Z to the list. For far too long, Nissan let the 370Z wallow without an update. It wasn’t until 2017 – or nine years after the 370Z debuted – that Nissan started to simply formulate what the next Z would be. And now finally in 2022, we get to slide behind the wheel of a new Z car.

Video transcript

- So the Nissan Z actually has quite a bit of room in the back for luggage. Let me get the trusty tape measure. At its widest point in the back, 53 inches. So what's that? Four foot five. 4 and 1/2 feet almost, which is pretty wide.

You do have the sloping roof, so you can't fill it, you know, super high. But even up front where you have more height, you're talking, you know, four feet of room. You do have some parts back here that intrude. So you don't have 4 feet of width the entire way, but it's definitely enough for a few luggage bags.

Storage-wise, for what it is, I'd say it's pretty good. It's a heck of a lot better than I expected when I got this car. In fact, I picked this up at the airport. I was flying home from a trip, and I did have a few bags, my wife and I. And they fit no problem. So carry-ons, yes. Personal bags, yes.

Checked luggage depending on what size it is. If you have, like, a big, hard-sided checked luggage bag, I don't think it would fit back here. So that's an issue. But for more on the luggage tests, you can check out autoblog.com. We do luggage tests on a ton of cars.

Being in Nissan's product lineup since the early 1970s, the Z models have always been famous for their precise handling, enticing design language, and the comfortable ride, all of which made them a favorite amongst the American car buyers. They were also much better daily drivers than the Nissan GTR lineup, and were supremely reliable and fuel-efficient, too. Even though things have changed quite a bit as the generations passed, the all-new Nissan Z, which is part of the seventh generation, will soon be launched.

Coming in three trim configurations, with an estimated base MSRP of $40,000, the Nissan Z comes with a twin-turbo V6 motor, providing better performance numbers than the previous 370Z. The performance hasn't been watered down, and the well-calibrated suspension and chassis ensure that it remains one of the most iconic models of all time. The styling is quirky, and the cabin is filled with all the relevant features. Competing with the Chevrolet Camaro SS and the Ford Mustang GT, here are 10 things you need to know before buying the 2023 Nissan Z.

10/10 Handsome Exterior Design

Starting off from the front end, we feel that the designers of Nissan have managed to give it a perfect balance between the neo-retro-ness and modern design language. The uses many elements from the old Nissan 240Z and the newer elements like LED headlights with LED DRLs make it look very sharp. The blacked-out grille and the low height give it the required sportiness, too.

The styling is very different from the previous generation 370Z, and it is a definite head-turner wherever it goes. The character lines on the hood and profile look stunning, and 19" forged race wheels and the red brake calipers with massive rotors round off the design quite well. The black mirrors and roof, clean door handles, beautiful LED taillights, and the massive rear diffuser with dual exhaust give it more character.

9/10 Twin-Turbo V6 Motor Provides Fast Acceleration

The first thing that you notice when you pop the hood is the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine producing 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. The transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual with rev-match functionality or an optional 9-speed torque converter automatic. There is launch control and the power is put down through the rear wheels with a limited-slip differential.

This V6 motor sounds beautiful at lower and mid RPMs, and it sings as you approach the redline. The all-new 3.0-liter motor is very peppy, and the wide torque band makes it a hoot to drive. Launch the car, and it goes like a sting, with no noticeable turbo lag and excellent grunt. The manual gearbox is slick-shifting and offers short throws, and the 9-speed automatic is reasonably fast as well.

8/10 Spacious Trunk

Open the trunk of the 2023 Nissan Z with the press of the button, and you would be surprised with the amount of space. The trunk is also designed perfectly, especially when compared to the Camaro SS, letting you fit those massive airport bags upright. The bracing that is present behind the seats does not eat into the trunk space and is very neatly designed.

The only gripe we have with the trunk design of the 2023 Nissan Z is the high loading lip, making it very hard to put in and take out the cargo. There is no underfloor storage or the side bulkhead storage spaces like that of the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS, which could have been very useful as well.

7/10 A Roomy 2-Seater

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

Being a 2-seater sports coupe, the 2023 Nissan Z turned out to be a comfortable and spacious car to be in. Getting into the seats was to be an easy affair, as you wouldn't need to crouch into it as the design suggests. Once inside, you would also notice the excellent legroom and shoulder room.

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

Even the headroom was more than adequate for people under 6'3", however, the Camaro fared better here. The Camaro SS also offered rear seats, even though it was terrible in terms of space. The seats are wrapped in leather and Alcantara and offers excellent side bolstering, under-thigh support, and lower back support.

6/10 Intuitive Infotainment System

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

The 9" touchscreen system in the 2023 Nissan Z turned out to be superior to the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system present in the Camaro. The display quality is excellent, and the user interface felt a bit more modern than that of the Camaro.

All the required entertainment and connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, navigation, Bluetooth, AUX, USB ports, and voice recognition are standard. The audio experience through the optional Bose premium audio system is decent for the segment, offering clear vocals and punchy bass.

5/10 Loaded With Safety Features

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

The Nissan 370Z was a model that missed out on many essential safety and driver-assistance features, and they weren't even on the options list. This made it a somewhat unsafe car for daily driving. The build quality wasn't the best either. However, these issues have been sorted with the seventh generation 2023 Nissan Z.

The 2023 Nissan Z gets all the driver-assistance techs like automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blindspot monitoring as standard. All the basic safety features like ABS, airbags, traction control, stability control, rearview camera, and side-impact beams are onboard too. However, it hasn't been crash-tested by the NHTSA and IIHS yet.

4/10 Interior Design Won't Be To Everyone's Taste

2023-nissan-z-03Nissan

The interior styling does see a lot of similarities to the Nissan 370Z, however, there are quite a lot of differences in the form of materials, color scheme, and a few more, helping it to stand out well in the sports coupe segment. The blue and black color combination look stunning in real life, and the dark accents that are present in the cabin accentuate the design well.

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

The Alcantara and leather elements that are present in the dashboard and door cards are soft to touch and ooze a sense of quality, which wasn't the case with the Camaro. The analog gauges mounted on the upper dashboard area coupled with a well-integrated infotainment system and digital gauge display add to the modernity of the cabin.

3/10 Mediocre Fuel Efficiency

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

Even though the 2023 Nissan Z comes with a V6 motor under the hood coupled with a well-spread out 9-speed automatic transmission, do not expect it to win any awards for the fuel efficiency. Being a car that is manufactured to provide drivers with pleasure on a racetrack, the fuel efficiency is expected to be similar to its main competitor, the Camaro SS.

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

Coming with the same motor present in the Infiniti Q60, the city gas mileage of around 20 MPG and the highway gas mileage of around 28 MPG is expected, and that is better than the older Nissan 370Z which offered a combined gas mileage of 20 MPG. The Chevrolet Camaro SS managed 19 MPG of combined gas mileage.

2/10 Superb Overall Build Quality

2023 Nissan Z Proto SpecVia Nissan

The 2023 Nissan Z is built on the Nissan FM platform, and that helps this sports coupe to feel a bit more poised and stiff than its rivals. Apart from that, we also found the overall exterior build quality to be similar to some of the European rivals, as all the panels feel solidly put together with no major flexing. The body is constructed in high tensile steel and aluminum as well.

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

The doors close with a reassuring thud, which wasn't present in the older 370Z, and we do appreciate the solidity. The same can also be seen in the interior as well, which comes fitted with soft-touch materials all around, including leather, Alcantara, and soft injection-molded plastic. There were no rattles and squeaks from anywhere, and we found the cabin experience to be great for long-distance touring as well as for city commuting.

1/10 Lots Of Standard Features

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

The Nissan 370Z was always criticized for its lack of many modern amenities. As a result, it wasn't a sales success in the final years of its production. However, the 2023 Nissan Z has changed that, with the inclusion of all the relevant tech and features that should be present in a car that is launched this year.

2023 Nissan ZVia Nissan

The features like automatic climate control air conditioning, heated and powered seats, 9" touchscreen infotainment system with all the much-needed tech, and steering mounted audio controls are standard. The 12.3" digital gauge display offers all the information you need and is superior to the rivals. The aluminum pedals, tilt and telescopic steering with leather wrap, and paddle shifters are onboard as well.

Does the Nissan Z have a trunk?

The Nissan Z has 6.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which is a little subpar for a sports car. Like past models, the trunk lid is technically a liftback, but cargo must be lifted over a sill to be placed in the trunk. "Lifting the rear hatch reveals a decent-sized cargo area."

Does the 2023 Nissan Z have back seats?

Although it's new for 2023, Nissan hasn't changed the layout of the Z's cabin. It remains a two-seat coupe with no vestigial rear seats à la Porsche 911.

How big is the trunk of a 370z?

Overview. The Nissan 370z has a trunk space of 4.2 ft3 or 6.9 ft3, depending on its trim and model year.

When can you order a 2023 Nissan Z?

The 2023 Nissan Z is set for U.S. sales in spring of 2022.
